Caucasian Shepherd
Ancient guardian breed for estate and property protection
Breed History
The Caucasian Shepherd Dog, also known as the Caucasian Ovcharka, is an ancient breed originating from the Caucasus Mountain region spanning Russia, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan. For over 2,000 years, these massive dogs protected livestock from wolves, bears, and human threats in the harsh mountain environment.
Soviet breeders in the 1920s began standardizing the breed, selecting for size, power, and protective instincts. During the Cold War, they were used to guard political prisoners along the Berlin Wall and at military installations throughout the USSR. Their reputation as fearless guardians grew internationally.
Today, Caucasian Shepherds are employed for estate protection, industrial facility security, and rural property guarding. Their massive size, territorial nature, and independent thinking make them unsuitable for typical family environments but ideal for serious protection work where human presence is minimal and threats are significant.
