Breed History
The Kangal Shepherd Dog is an ancient breed native to the Sivas region of central Turkey, with a lineage dating back thousands of years. Named after the Kangal district, these dogs were bred by Turkish shepherds to protect flocks from wolves, bears, and jackals in the harsh Anatolian plateau.
The breed is considered a national treasure in Turkey, where it's illegal to export purebred Kangals without government permission. Their legendary bite force of 743 PSI (pounds per square inch) is the highest of any domestic dog breed, making them formidable protectors against predators.
Unlike many guardian breeds, Kangals are known for their calm, controlled temperament. They're not aggressive by nature but possess the instinct and capability to neutralize threats when necessary. Today, they're used for livestock protection, estate guarding, and serious protection work where their size, strength, and natural guarding ability are required.
